In the
1970’s there was a popular term among those seeking the revival of the Church
and the expansion of God’s work in the Earth. ‘Navel Gazing’, was the term used
for those who were so focused on themselves that they spent little time or
energy doing the work of the ministry.
In the Bible there is another phrase ‘at ease in Zion’. Amos 6:1 “Woe
to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who feel secure on the mountain
of Samaria, the notable men of the first of the nations, to whom the house of
Israel comes!
Verses 1-14 tell of a people concerned about their own pleasure
and secure in what they themselves have gotten. They are so self absorbed that
the fail to realize the urgency of their situation without God’s favor and
their need to serve Him and not themselves.
When I look at todays Church in America and elsewhere
there is no fire in our bones for the advancing of the Gospel but a passion to
know and experience more so that we have the pleasure of God’s goodness and the
comfort of being blessed.
What can we do? This is one of those things that we must
ask the Holy Spirit to help us with, both individually and as part of the local
church.
God is still working to save the lost, build up believers
and bring us into maturity. He desires that we not sit these challenges out but
that we once again lay our lives at His feet and labor though His power and
gifts to accomplish these things.
Shake off the attitude of pleasing ourselves, repent if
needed and strap on His armor for the battle is upon us!
