With Thanksgiving behind us, we now enter the
time of the year in which President Franklin Roosevelt had urged Americans to
spend time reading the Bible. Indisputably, the Bible is the book upon which
our American republic rests – a fact attested to by many presidents:
“[The Bible] is the rock on which our Republic
rests.” President Andrew Jackson
“The Bible. . . . is indispensable to the
safety and permanence of our institutions.” President Zachary Taylor
“[T]he teachings of the Bible are so
interwoven and entwined with our whole civic and social life that it would be
. . . impossible for us to figure to ourselves what that life would be if
these teachings were removed.” President Teddy Roosevelt
“Of the many influences that have shaped the
United States of America into a distinctive Nation and people, none may be
said to be more fundamental and enduring than the Bible.” President Ronald Reagan
Today, only 14% of Christians read the Bible daily, so most Americans have
no knowledge of the most basic teachings of the Bible; and as Biblical
knowledge declines, so does the strength and effectiveness of American
institutions. Biblical knowledge is key to American longevity and prosperity.
Understanding this, in 1941, President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt urged:
I suggest a nationwide reading of the Holy
Scriptures during the period from Thanksgiving Day to Christmas…[G]o to…the
Scriptures for a renewed and strengthening contact with those eternal truths
and majestic principles which have inspired such eternal truths and majestic
principles which have inspired such measure of true greatness as this nation
has achieved.
This is an excellent recommendation! So commit
yourself to reading and studying the Scriptures over the coming weeks. There
are many good plans to help you, and even Bible apps that read the Bible to you. In
fact, you can read through the entire Bible in only about 15 minutes each
day over the course of a year. Psalm 11:3 asks: “If the foundations are
destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Our foundations – the most important
part of any structure – can be preserved by a knowledge of the Bible. So
let’s follow President Roosevelt’s request to particularly spend the time
between now and Christmas in reading and studying God’s Word.

2016 Election Prayer
God have mercy on America and your people in this land. Forgive us as a nation for forsaking your Word and your pathways and delivers us from those who have pushed us toward the destruction of your ways! Grant us and those who would honor you, your favor in this election. May the schemes of the people and powers who deny you as the one true God be destroyed and may their own ungodly wisdom and schemes be their undoing! Lord God creator and sustainer of all that exist have mercy on America once again in this election.

Keep the Fire of the Spirit Burning Bright
The fire of the Spirit must not be allowed to go out in our lives!
We who are friends of God must continually seek to know His heart and be focused on His presence.
We must ask:
1. Is His pillar of fire (which represents His presence and glory) standing still or preparing to move?
2. Are we more concerned with His laws, precepts and ways than our ideas on how to further His work among us?
3. Do we diligently seek Him though prayer, His Word and passionate worship throughout our day?
4. When we lay down at night are we open to His Spirit speaking to us in dreams, visions and should He desire awaken us with direction to pray, seek Him in His Word or just quiet ourselves so that we might hear Him speak?
5. Our ways are not His and as a result our wisdom on any issue must align with and be shaped by His Word and Ways!

Deliver Us from the Seat of The Scornful
Have you noticed that many people are becoming a part of the
bickering, slandering and thoughtlessly critical of others? The news, Facebook,
Twitter and everywhere we look or listen. Not only are we nasty toward one
another but also we lack wisdom in our communication. While honest disagreement
is natural the way we communicate our disagreement has grown cancerous.
If someone states an opinion that we believe is wrong we criticizing
it and him or her. If later they begin to change their opinion toward what we
though was good we do not say great they have come around to a wiser position
we criticize the change instead of complementing them on being wise.
We have become so consumed with criticism that we have become
mockers and nasty to the point that we become even viler than the people or
ideas we are critical of.
Jesus was hard on those whom put on the face of righteousness
and goodness while being hate filled and vile. Some today do this and think
that it allows them to be hateful and nasty toward others
WE have moved beyond that to outwardly being harsh and
claiming that our harshness is actually kindness, goodness and truth.
Blessed (happy, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable) is the
man who walks and lives not in the counsel of the ungodly [following
their advice, their plans and purposes], nor stands [submissive and inactive]
in the path where those who violate God’s ways, nor sits down [to be
comfortable] where the scornful [and the mockers] gather. Psalm 1:11

Memorial Day
America has a long history of military members who have shown extraordinary courage, with many willingly giving their lives to secure the freedoms our nation enjoys, freedoms we often take for granted. On Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) we honor the sacrifice of these brave men and women.
World War II (1941-1945) was an especially deadly war, with over 400,000 Americans being killed in famous military engagements such as the Battle of the Bulge and D-Day as well as in many otherlesser known battles. Each life lost, whether in a major or an obscure battle, helped win peace and end tyranny. There were many heroes in that war, sung and unsung.
One amazing example of heroism occurred during the Campaign of Guadalcanal (August 1942-February 1943). Sergeant John Basilone and his handful of men were responsible for holding back a Japanese assault of thousands on October 24-25, 1942. Basilone, throughout this engagement, personally repaired and manned multiple machine guns. At times, he was unable to shoot his guns over the piles of dead Japanese who fell at the brink of his hill. When his small detachment ran low, Basilone fought his way through the Japanese lines to resupply critically-needed ammunition. The Americans eventually won this long campaign. As a result of his actions, Basilone was awardedthe Congressional Medal of Honor. (The picture on the left is of a magazine personally signed by Basilone, one of the many World War II treasures we have in the WallBuilders library.)
Later in the war at the Battle of Iwo Jima(February 19-March 26, 1945), Basilone came ashore with the first wave of Marines. Shortly after landing, his unit was trapped by machine guns from Japanese blockhouses. Basilone worked his way around one of these blockhouses and single-handedly destroyed it. Later, as he was making his way towards an airfield, he came across an American tank trapped in a minefield. While under fire, he guidedthe tank out of the minefield and to safety. He was later killed by flying shrapnel. Basilone was awarded the Navy Cross for his courageous actions during the battle.
There are many additional stories of heroic and noble acts by American soldiers throughout our history. This Memorial Day as we remember the military members who lost their lives in battle, let us honor the courage they showed.
(By the way, if you're interested in reading some early sermons about Memorial Day, check out these from the WallBuilders library.)

The Bible Dictionary You will Want to Use
Nelson's
Illustrated Bible Dictionary: New and Enhanced Edition is a delightful update
to it predecessor.
I love the ‘How
to use this dictionary’ in Bible Study section at the beginning of the book. It
provides a guide on how to use the vast amount of resources included within. If you are unfamiliar with using a Bible
dictionary it can be confusing and a little intimidating.
If a Christian
believer can only have three books, they should include a good cross-reference
Bible, a comprehensive concordance and a good Bible dictionary. With these you
can understand the Bible for your self and family, teach a Sunday school class
or proclaim the good news publicly.
When you compare
the structure and content of this new and updated bible dictionary with others
on the market today it stands out as one of the best. I have personally spent
many hours comparing them and appreciate the fact that Book Look Bloggers
provided me with a review copy of this one.
This is a
great and invaluable resource. Get yours today!

What Attributes of God Do We See in Jesus?
Verse: 2 Timothy 2:1-13
In Jesus we see God’s attributes of love, wisdom and grace. In 2 Timothy 2:11–13, Paul mentions some other divine attributes that Jesus clearly possesses. Verse 12 declares God’s justice: if we reject Christ, then God has no choice but to also reject us. God’s moral purity (see Isaiah 6:3-5 necessitates his justice; he cannot, will not and does not ignore sin. Jesus also possesses moral purity. As both Hebrews 4:14-15 and 1 John 3:5 attest, Jesus lived a sinless life. God the Father also endorsed Jesus’ moral purity (see Matthew 17:5).
Following the stern warning of 2 Timothy 2:12, Paul highlights Jesus’ faithfulness. Although we may turn away from Jesus, he gives us many undeserved chances to be reconciled with him. God’s faithfulness is well chronicled in the Old Testament’s accounts of the Israelites’ cycles of disobedience that were met with God’s mercy.
Both God and his Son, Jesus, possess moral purity, justice and faithfulness. These traits could not belong to an ordinary human but rather describe God incarnate. The fact that Jesus possessed these traits gives powerful testimony to his claims to be.
